Mina Grime is unlucky, unpopular and uncoordinated; until she saves her crush's life on a field trip, changing her High School status from loser to hero overnight. But with her new found fame brings misfortune in the form of an old family curse come to light. For Mina is descended from the Brothers Grimm and has inherited all of their unfinished fairy tale business. Which includes trying to outwit a powerful Story from making her it's next fairy tale victim.
To break the fairy tale curse on her family and make these deadly occurrences stop, Mina must finish the tales until the very Grimm end.
It’s been a while “Did Not Finish” post, but alas. We’re back together again.
UnEnchanted by Chanda Hahn is the kind of novel that really disappoints me because I absolutely love the idea behind it, but the execution just fell flat for me as a reader. And I think that the main reason for my inability to get very far in the book was Mina’s voice, which seemed very juvenile in comparison to how I normally like my heroines to speak and act, both outwardly and inwardly.
And then there are the character’s who surround Mina, like her social media-obsessed best friend, who makes everyone in Gen X seem shallow and void of personality that goes beyond “This selfie didn’t get 100 likes…delete!” I wanted a character with real traits, not the watered down version that every book snob thinks the characters in young adult novels is.
In the end, UnEnchanted just wasn’t for me.
