Ten Music Videos that Should Be Books NOW

February 16, 2016     Holly     Book Lists, Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme from The Broke and the Bookish. For info about the topics and how to participate, click here.

So, technically I’m taking a bit of liberty with this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, but I wanted to write about music videos that I’ve absolutely loved the story behind, but desperately want to actually read. Like, I want to know character names and motivations and hear their voices in my head. Basically, I want more than four minutes with these stories, and you should too!

1.“Handwritten” by The Gaslight Anthem

Listen, I need to know what happened in the lives of every single person in this video, okay? I need the full story and I need it now because THERE ARE TOO MANY MISSING PIECES!

2. “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper

Okay, would this not be the most fun YA book ever? Just a bunch of crazy, silly, do-what-we-want girls. It’d be such a great contemporary high school novel and no one can tell me any different.

3. “The Kill (Bury Me)” by Thirty Seconds to Mars

Okay, so obviously this video was channeling Stephen King’s The Shining, but that doesn’t make it any less obvious that this would make a great horror/thriller novel. And if the main character was channeling Jared Leto via 2006, well, I wouldn’t complain.

4. “Midnight City,” “Reunion,” and “Wait” by M83

Honestly, this is just such an interesting and cool series of videos that I honestly would LOVE to read the story of these kids and their mind powers. Are they aliens? Is this even Earth? Why does that boy fall from the sky? And who is the intense little girl who’s followed by wolves? Stunning.

5. “Two Black Cadillacs” by Carrie Underwood

Two women plotting the murder of the man who’s cheating on them. Morbid? Yes. Entertaining? HELL YES! Part of the allure of a good book is that it’s a break from reality. Obviously, (most) people would never plot an actual revenge killing. But in a fictional world, we can sure enjoy it.

6. “Take On Me” by a-ha

Strange rebel biker cutie pulls you into a comic book and takes you on an adventure? Don’t even try and tell me you wouldn’t read the hell out of that book.

7. “The Reason” and “Same Direction” by Hoobastank

Okay, so don’t ask me what this video (and its sequel) have to actually do with the songs, because I don’t know. What I do know is that there are jewelry heists and car chases and surprise twists and any story that has to do with jewel thieves is a-okay in my book.

8. “Bad Blood” by Taylor Swift

Obviously, I think anything that involves a bunch of badass ladies is a great idea. And what music video featured more badass ladies in one place than “Bad Blood?” Nothing.

9. “Colder Weather” by Zac Brown Band

I’ve always thought this was such a wonderful video, and I’ve always wanted to know what happened after the end of the video. Hello, perfect time for a book.

10. “Dancing With Myself” by Billy Idol

I don’t know what’s happening. But it’s crazy and awesome, so I’m just going to leave this here.

So what music videos would you love to see as a book? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
